LA CHANSON DE ROLAND

A feature-length TV documentary is based on a script written by Mia Sperber. It deals with the intriguing era of Emperor Charles the Great (Charlemagne), a man whose intention was to change things for the better and unify the people of Europe in a community of truth and care for others and who ascended to throne in 768 AD.  He soon became famous for his Lombardian, Spanish and Saxon Campaigns, and by his crowning by Pope Leo III as “Imperator Augustus” in Rome in the year 800 and thus founder of the Holy Roman Empire. “La Chanson de Roland” (The Song of Roland) is an anonymous French epic, dating perhaps as early as the middle of 11th century.  Our TV documentary will analyze the beauty, the intensity and the perennial human issues this splendid poem reflects, and through it, will bring to life an exceptional era in the European cultural history.
